- Soil themselves as it is too painful to get up/walk to toilet – losing their dignity and causing anxiety
- Hide themselves under furniture, in other rooms, under bushes – away from the family
- Refuse to eat or drink or eating infrequently
- Struggle to breathe, or have laboured breathing
- Not wanting to engage with the family, or go for walks
